เมื่อวันที่ 10 เมษายน 2558 นายมาริษ เสงี่ยมพงษ์ (เอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงเวลลิงตัน) ได้เชิญรองอธิบดีกรมการจัดหางาน และคณะของไทย ซึ่งเดินทางมาราชการในนิวซีแลนด์ มาประชุมหารือเกี่ยวกับการดูแลสภาพความเป็นอยู่ของแรงงานไทยที่มาทำงานในสวนผลไม้ และโรงงานบรรจุหีบห่อผลไม้ในนิวซีแลนด์ โดยทูตมาริษ กล่าวว่า ปัจจุบันแรงงานไทยที่เข้ามาทำงานในภาคการเกษตรของนิวซีแลนด์มีประมาณ 1 พัน – 2 พันคน เป็นแรงงานตามฤดูกาล โดยเข้ามาทำงานประมาณ 5-6 เดือน เมื่อหมดฤดูผลไม้ ก็จะเดินทางกลับไทย โดยส่วนใหญ่ แรงงานไทยเป็นที่ชื่นชอบของนายจ้างชาวกีวี เพราะขยันและมีฝีมือ แต่ได้ย้ำว่าแรงงานไทยต้องมีสภาพความเป็นอยู่ที่เหมาะสม และได้รับการปฎิบัติที่ดีจากนายจ้างด้วย ซึ่งในเรื่องนี้ ทูตมาริษ ฝากขอให้พี่น้องคนไทยในนิวซีแลนด์ช่วยกันดูแลพี่น้องแรงงานไทยที่เดินทางมาจากเมืองไทยด้วย

            นอกจากนี้ ทูตมาริษ ได้หารือเรื่องความเป็นไปได้ในการขยายจำนวนแรงงานไทยภาคการเกษตร ให้เข้ามาทำงานในนิวซีแลนด์เพิ่มมากขึ้น หรือสามารถอยู่ในนิวซีแลนด์ได้นานขึ้น ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องที่นายจ้างนิวซีแลนด์และแรงงานไทยต้องการทั้งสองฝ่าย และจะได้พิจารณาให้มีแรงงานไทยในภาคอื่นๆ ด้วย เช่น ภาคการก่อสร้าง โดยเฉพาะที่เมืองไคร๊ทเชิชส์ ที่กำลังมีการบรูณะปฏิสังขรณ์  และภาคการบริการ เป็นต้น ซึ่งเป็นส่วนที่แรงงานไทยมีความชำนาญ  โดยทูตมาริษจะได้คุยกับฝ่ายที่เกี่ยวข้องของนิวซีแลนด์ต่อไป

On the 10 April 2015, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, Ambassador of Thailand to New Zealand, invited  the deputy director of the department of employment and his delegation from Thailand on their visit to New Zealand, to discuss the wellbeing of Thai labourers working in New Zealand’s farms and fruit packing factories. The Ambassador pointed out that there are currently around one to two thousand Thai employees who are seasonal workers that would work for five to six months during the growing season and return to Thailand afterwards. Generally, Thai labourers are favoured by New Zealand employers because of their diligence and skills. Nevertheless, the Ambassador emphasised the importance of their working conditions and employers’ treatment of the Thai employees, requesting Thai communities in New Zealand to help look after their compatriots as well.

Moreover, the Ambassador conferred about the possibility of increasing the amount of Thai agricultural workers in New Zealand or lengthening period of stay for them, topics of mutual interests amongst the employers as well as laborers, and may consider extending this benefit to Thai workers in other sectors, such as construction and service, which would be beneficial to the reconstruction of Christchurch, especially construction, as Thai laborers are highly skilled in these fields. Further exchange with relevant New Zealand authorities will be made by the Ambassador.
