เมื่อวันที่ 14 มีนาคม 2558 ทูตมาริษ เสงี่ยมพงษ์ (เอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงเวลลิงตัน) พร้อมด้วยครอบครัวและข้าราชการ ได้เข้าร่วมพิธีเปิดงาน ASEAN/ Southeast Asian Night Market 2015 ที่กรุงเวลลิงตัน ซึ่งร่วมกันจัดโดย Wellington City Council, Asia New Zealand Foundation และคณะกรรมการประจำอาเซียน ณ กรุงเวลลิงตัน หรือ ASEAN Committee in Wellington (ACW) รวมถึงชุมชนประเทศอาเซียนในกรุงเวลลิงตัน โดยมีบุคคลสำคัญเข้าร่วมในพิธีเปิด ได้แก่ Her Worship Celia Wade-Brown นายกเทศมนตรีกรุงเวลลิงตัน  Hon. John Luxton ประธาน Asia New Zealand Foundation  นาง Melissa Lee สส.พรรค National (ผู้แทนนายกรัฐมนตรี John Key)  นาย Grant Robertson สส.พรรค Labour (ผู้แทนนาย Andrew Little หัวหน้าพรรคฝ่ายค้าน) และท่านทูตประเทศอาเซียนประจำนิวซีแลนด์ เป็นต้น  กิจกรรมดังกล่าวจัดขึ้นระหว่างวันที่ 13-14 มีนาคม 2558 ซึ่งเป็นการจัดขึ้นทุก ๆ 2 ปี โดยในปีนี้ถือวาระพิเศษ เพื่อเป็นการฉลองโอกาสครบรอบ 40 ปีความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างอาเซียนกับนิวซีแลนด์   

            ในงานดังกล่าว มีการออกบูธขายสินค้าที่ระลึกและอาหารของแต่ละชาติอาเซียน การแสดงทางวัฒนธรรมต่าง ๆ การเดินขบวนพาเหรดของชุนชนอาเซียน นอกจากนี้  ACW ได้ออกบูธอาเซียน เพื่อเผยแพร่ข้อมูลข่าวสารเกี่ยวกับ “อาเซียน” ให้กับชาวกีวีด้วย นอกจากนี้ ในบูธยังมีกิจกรรมถ่ายภาพกับชุดประจำชาติอาเซียน และการเล่นเกมส์ตอบคำถามอาเซียนด้วย  

            ในส่วนของไทย   สถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ ได้ร่วมกับกรมส่งเสริมวัฒนธรรมไทยและ Asia New Zealand Foundation เชิญคณะนักแสดงจากบ้านตุ๊กกะตุ่น หุ่นกระบอกไทย มาแสดงการเชิดหุ่นกระบอกไทยและสาธิตการทำหุ่นกระบอกไทยด้วย โดยได้รับความสนใจเป็นอย่างมากจากชาวกีวี โดยเฉพาะท่ารำที่อ่อนช้อยเสมือนมีชีวิต และลวดลายที่วิจิตรตระการตา นอกจากนี้ คณะนักแสดงยังได้ไปสาธิตการทำหุ่นกระบอกไทยที่พิพิธภัณฑ์ Pataka Museum of Art and Culture ซึ่งก็ได้รับความสนใจเป็นอย่างมากเช่นกัน   

            บ้านตุ๊กกะตุ่น หุ่นกระบอกไทย ตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี 2540 โดยคุณนิเวศ แววสมณะและกลุ่มคนที่มีใจรักงานศิลปะและต้องการรักษาวัฒนธรรมดั้งเดิม ซึ่งนับวันค่อย ๆ ถูกหลงลืมเลือนหายไป บ้านตุ๊กกะตุ่น หุ่นกระบอกไทย จึงเป็นแหล่งเผยแพร่ความรู้เกี่ยวกับศิลปะหุ่นกระบอกไทย เพื่อให้คนไทย ชาวต่างชาติ และเยาวชนรุ่นใหม่ได้ธำรงไว้ซึ่งศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมที่งดงามของไทย   

            ด้วยเหตุข้างต้น ทูตมาริษฯ จึงได้คุยในเบื้องต้นกับบ้านตุ๊กกะตุ่น หุ่นกระบอกไทย ที่อาจจะเชิญคณะนักแสดงมาแสดงหุ่นกระบอกไทยในนิวซีแลนด์อีกครั้งในอนาคต เพื่อเผยแพร่วัฒนธรรมไทยในนิวซีแลนด์ และเพื่อให้พี่น้องคนไทยได้ภาคภูมิใจ และช่วยให้หายคิดถึงบ้านกันบ้าง

           On the 14^th March 2015, H.E. Mr. Maris Sangiampongsa, the ambassador of Thailand to New Zealand, along with Embassy’s officials and family, attended the Formal Ceremony of the ASEAN/Southeast Asian Night Market 2015 in Wellington. The event was jointly organised by Wellington City Council, Asia New Zealand Foundation, ASEAN Committee in Wellington (AWC) and various ASEAN communities residing in the capital city. There were also prominent dignitaries attending the Formal Ceremony including: Her Worship Celia Wade-Brown, Mayor of Wellington; Hon. John Luxton, Chairman of Asia New Zealand Foundation; Ms Melissa Lee, a National MP representing New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Rt.Hon. John Key; Mr Grant Robertson, a Labour MP representing the leader of the opposition, Mr. Andrew Little; and ambassadors from other ASEAN countries.

            During the event, there were booths selling a wide variety of souvenirs and foods from the ASEAN countries as well as cultural performances and parades by the members of ASEAN communities. The ACW set up a booth to disseminate information and news about ASEAN to the locals. Moreover, at the ASEAN booth, there were fun activities, e.g., photographs with various ASEAN traditional costumes and an ASEAN quiz with prizes.

            For Thailand, the Royal Thai Embassy, in partnership with Thailand’s Department of Cultural Promotion and Asia New Zealand Foundation, invited a group of puppeteers from “Ban Tuk Ka Tun, the House of Thai Puppets” to perform and demonstrate how these puppets are made. The Kiwi audience showed great interest and were mesmerised by the performers’ ability to operate their extravagantly decorated puppets in such a gentle and expressive ways, as if they were alive. Afterwards, the Thai puppeteers took another opportunity to illustrate how to make these puppets at Pataka Museum of Art and Culture, in Porirua, which was also very well received.

            Ban Tuk Ka Tun was founded in 1997 by Mr. Nivet Waevsamana and a group of people who share not only their love of this traditional art form, but also a determination to preserve this traditional art form. As a consequence, Ban Tuk Ka Tun has become a centre for promulgating the art of Thai puppetry to the Thai people, foreigners, and the next generation in order to preserve this tradition and art form.

            Due to success of Ban Tuk Ka Tun’s performance, the Thai Ambassador discussed with Mr. Nivet about the possibility of inviting them to perform in New Zealand again in the near future. It is hoped this would further promote Thai culture as well as help easing homesickness for many Thai expatriates in New Zealand
