เมื่อวันที่ 14 สิงหาคม 2568 นายวราวุธ ภู่อภิญญา เอกอัครราชทูต และนายณัฐพล สอนจรูญ (ที่ปรึกษา) ได้เข้าพบปะสนทนากับนาย Phil Mauger นายกเทศมนตรีเมืองไครสต์เชิร์ชที่ Christchurch City Council ในโอกาสมอบเงินจำนวน 300,000 บาทในนามของประชาชนชาวไทย และชุมชนไทยในนิวซีแลนด์ ร่วมสมทบทุนช่วยเหลือการบูรณะมหาวิหารไครสต์เชิร์ช
ทั้งสองฝ่ายได้หารือเกี่ยวกับโอกาสความร่วมมือระหว่างกันในปี 2569 ซึ่งจะครบรอบ 70 ปี ความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตไทย-นิวซีแลนด์ ซึ่งไทยและเมืองไครสต์เชิร์ชยังมีความร่วมมือได้อีกมาก โดยเฉพาะด้านการท่องเที่ยวและการศึกษา
จากนั้น เอกอัครราชทูต พร้อมด้วยนายกเทศมนตรี และชุมชนไทยในเมืองไครสต์เชิร์ชได้เดินทางไปยังมหาวิหารไครสต์เชิร์ชและได้มอบเงินจำนวน 300,000 บาท ให้แก่นายกเทศมนตรี โดยมีบาทหลวง Reverend Canon Ben Truman เข้าร่วม และเข้าชมความคืบหน้าการบูรณะภายในมหาวิหารที่ได้รับความเสียหายอย่างหนักจากเหตุการณ์แผ่นดินไหวเมื่อวันที่ 22 กุมภาพันธ์ 2554
On 14 August 2025, Ambassador Waravuth Pouapinya and Mr. Natthaphol Sonjaroon, Counsellor, paid a call on Mr. Phil Mauger, Mayor of Christchurch, at the Christchurch City Council, to donate a goodwill contribution of 300,000 Baht from the people of Thailand and the Thai community in New Zealand to support the restoration of Christchurch Cathedral.
Both sides discussed opportunities for the future cooperation, particularly in tourism and education, in the year 2026, which will mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and New Zealand.
Following the meeting, the Ambassador, together with Mayor and members of Thai community in Christchurch, visited the Christchurch Cathedral Reinstatement Project and presented the goodwill contribution cheque of 300,000 Baht to the Mayor and Reverend Canon Ben Truman, the Dean of Christchurch Cathedral. The group then took a brief study visit inside the cathedral, which had suffered severe damage from the major earthquake on 22 February 2011.
