เมื่อวันที่ ๓-๕ มิถุนายน ๒๕๖๘ นายวราวุธ ภู่อภิญญา เอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงเวลลิงตัน พร้อมด้วยศาสตราจารย์นายแพทย์ปิยะมิตร ศรีธรา อธิการบดีมหาวิทยาลัยมหิดล ผู้บริหารและคณะแพทย์จากโรงพยาบาลรามาธิบดี ได้เดินทางเยือนรัฐเอกราชซามัว ภายใต้โครงการแสวงหาความร่วมมือด้านการแพทย์/สาธารณสุข ระหว่างไทยกับนิวซีแลนด์ และประเทศในเขตอาณาของสถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ (หมู่เกาะคุก ซามัว นีวเว และตูวาลู) ซึ่งในการเยือนครั้งนี้ เอกอัครราชทูตฯ และคณะได้เข้าเยี่ยมคารวะ ฯพณฯ Honourable Fiame Naomi Mata’afa นายกรัฐมนตรีแห่งรัฐเอกราชซามัว และ ฯพณฯ Honourable Valasi Luapitofanua Toogamaga Tafito Selesele รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงสาธารณสุขแห่งรัฐเอกราชซามัว ทั้งสองฝ่ายได้หารือถึงความร่วมมือด้านการแพทย์และสาธารณสุขระหว่างไทยกับซามัว ซึ่งการเยือนของคณะแพทย์ไทยในครั้งนี้ เป็นครั้งแรกที่ได้ดำเนินโครงการให้ความช่วยเหลือและให้ความร่วมมือด้านการแพทย์/สาธารณสุขกับประเทศหมู่เกาะในภูมิภาคแปซิฟิกใต้ ที่สะท้อนพันธกรณีของไทยต่อการพัฒนาสาธารณสุขระหว่างประเทศและการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวเพื่อรับบริการทางการแพทย์ (medical tourism) พร้อมทั้งสนับสนุนการเป็นศูนย์กลางทางการแพทย์ (medical hub) ของไทย
โครงการดังกล่าวเป็นการริเริ่มของสถานเอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงเวลลิงตัน ที่สานต่อประเด็นจากการหารือระหว่างเอกอัครราชทูตวราวุธฯ กับผู้นำซามัว เมื่อครั้งเอกอัครราชทูตฯ เดินทางไปยื่นพระราชสาส์นตราตั้งต่อประมุขแห่งรัฐเอกราชซามัว เมื่อเดือนพฤศจิกายน ๒๕๖๖
On June 3–5 2025, Mr. Waravuth Pouapinya, Ambassador of Thailand to New Zealand and the Independent State of Samoa, led the Thai medical delegation from Mahidol University, Bangkok, to visit the Independent State of Samoa to explore and extend possible cooperation to Samoa. The delegation was honoured to exchange views and discussed issues of medical and public healthcare with the Hon. Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Samoa, and with the Hon. Valasi Luapitofanua Toogamaga Tafito Selesele, Minister of Health of Samoa.
The Thai medical team from the Faculty of Medicine, Ramathibodi Hospital, Bangkok, comprises Professor Piyamitr Sritara, MD, FRCP, President of Mahidol University, along with other executives and the Thai medical doctors. This mission, the first ever, is the initiative of the Royal Thai Embassy in Wellington to explore possible medical and healthcare collaborations between Thailand and Samoa. This well reflects Thailand’s commitment to international health development and promotes medical tourism to Thailand as well as Thailand as a medical hub in the region.
