เมื่อวันที่ ๔ กันยายน ๒๕๖๗ นายวราวุธ ภู่อภิญญา เอกอัครราชทูต ณ กรุงเวลลิงตัน พร้อมด้วยเจ้าหน้าที่สถานเอกอัครราชทูตฯ และผู้แทนชุมชนไทยในนิวซีแลนด์ได้เข้าร่วมพระราชพิธีพระศพของสมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีตูเฮอิเตีย โปตาตาอู เต เวโรวีโร ที่ ๗ กษัตริย์แห่งชนเผ่าเมารี ณ เมืองฮามิลตัน ประเทศนิวซีแลนด์ ซึ่งเสด็จสวรรคต เมื่อวันที่ ๓๐ สิงหาคม ๒๕๖๗ ด้วยพระชนมายุ ๖๙ พรรษา

สมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีตูเฮอิเตียทรงเป็นกษัตริย์แห่งชนเผ่าเมารี ซึ่งเป็นชนพื้นเมืองดั้งเดิมของนิวซีแลนด์และได้รับความเคารพอย่างสูงจากชาวเมารีในฐานะผู้นำทางจิตวิญญาณและวัฒนธรรม

หลังจากการสวรรคตของพระองค์ ชนเผ่าเมารีได้แต่งตั้งกษัตริย์พระองค์ใหม่ คือ พระราชินีตูเฮอิเตีย โปตาตาอู ที่มีชื่อเต็มว่า Kuini Nga Wai Hono i Te Po (ควีนี งาไว โฮโน อิ เทโป) พระองค์ทรงเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์เมารีองค์ที่ ๘ และเป็นสตรีพระองค์ที่สองที่ได้รับการแต่งตั้งเป็นพระมหากษัตริย์ในประวัติศาสตร์ของชนเผ่าเมารี โดยสืบทอดตำแหน่งจากสมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีตูเฮอิเตีย โปตาตาอู ที่ ๗ ผู้เป็นพระบิดา

พระราชินี Kuini Nga Wai Hono i Te Po พระชนมายุ ๒๗ พรรษา ทรงเป็นพระธิดาพระองค์เล็กของสมเด็จพระราชาธิบดีตูเฮอิเตีย และมีพระเชษฐาอีก ๒ พระองค์ พระราชินีพระองค์แรกที่ทรงดำรงตำแหน่งพระมหากษัตริย์ คือ Te Atairangikaahu ซึ่งเป็นพระชนนีพระราชาธิบดีตูเฮอิเตีย โปตาตาอู เต เวโรวีโร ที่ ๗ และเสด็จสวรรคตในปี ๒๕๔๙

การสืบราชสันตติวงศ์ครั้งนี้ ถือเป็นเหตุการณ์สำคัญที่ส่งผลต่อวิถีชีวิตและวัฒนธรรมของชาวเมารี โดยชาวเมารีคาดหวังว่าภายใต้การนำของพระราชินี Kuini Nga Wai Hono i Te Po พระองค์จะสามารถธำรงรักษาและสืบทอดวัฒนธรรม รวมถึงเสริมสร้างความสัมพันธ์ที่ดีระหว่างชนเผ่าเมารีกับประชาคมนานาชาติ

On 4 September 2024, Ambassador Waravuth Pouapinya, along with the embassy staff, and representatives of the Thai community in New Zealand, attended the funeral ceremony of His Majesty King Tūheitia Pōtatau Te Wherowhero VII, King of Māori, in Hamilton, New Zealand, who passed away on 30 August 2024, at the age of 69.

His Majesty King Tuheitia was the revered leader of Māori, and was deeply respected for his role as both a spiritual and cultural figurehead.

Following the passing of King Tuheitia, the Māori people appointed a new monarch, Her Majesty Queen Kuini Nga Wai Hono i Te Po, also known as King Tuheitia Pōtatau VIII. Her Majesty is the 8th monarch of the Māori and only the second woman to assume this esteemed role in Māori history. She succeeds her father, the late King Tuheitia Pōtatau VII.

At the age of 27, Her Majesty Queen Kuini Nga Wai Hono i Te Po is the youngest child of the late King with two elder brothers and is regarded as a prominent female leader among the Māori people. She follows in the legacy of her grandmother, Her Majesty Queen Te Atairangikaahu, the first Māori queen, who passed away in 2006.

This succession represents a momentous occasion with profound implications for the culture and traditions of the Māori people. The Māori community holds high hopes that under the leadership of Her Majesty Queen Kuini Nga Wai Hono i Te Po, their cultural heritage will continue to flourish, and relations between the Māori people and the international community will be further strengthened.
