The Royal Thai Embassy, together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture of Thailand, presented a Grand Opening Performance of the prestigious Khon classical Thai masked dance-drama at the St James’ Theatre, Wellington on Thursday 7 April; and also held a two-day Thai Festival at Odlins Plaza on the Wellington waterfront on April 9 and 10 to mark the 60^th Anniversary of Thailand – New Zealand Diplomatic Relations.

Both events were very well attended and very successful.  The Embassy expresses its sincere appreciation for our partners and friends in the private sector, as well as the people of New Zealand, for helping to make these events to be the eminent successes that they were.

The people-to-people part of the relationship is the fundamental layer was strengthened and enhanced by the success of these events, and form the basis of our reasons to celebrate, not less important than the other aspects, being the government-to-government and business-to-business relationships.

The Grand Opening Performance of the prestigious Khon classical Thai masked dance-drama at the St James’ Theatre was presented by a professional troupe of more than 30 performers and musicians from the Fine Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture.  The audience was particularly enthralled by the story line of the Khon, following the Ramakhien, a Thai version of the ancient Hindu epic poem, the Ramayana; as well as by the sometimes delicate and sometimes very acrobatic movements of the dancers.

The Thai Festival at Odlins Plaza included an abundance of food stalls providing authentic Thai food, including some dishes not often found in regular Thai restaurants, such as “Crispy Gems in coconut milk” and coconut dumplings.  There were also a variety of performances on stage, including selected scenes from the Khon, the Dance of the Four Regions, drumming, singing and more.  Performers included the Ministry of Culture troupe, members of the local Thai community in Wellington, as well as members of the StarJam charity organisation.  Other attractions at the Festival were the Tuk Tuk rides, and demonstrations of beautiful Thai handicrafts.

Furthermore, on 8, 11 and 14 April 2016, Thai cultural performances, including Khon, were performed at Kapiti College (Paraparaumu), New Zealand School of Dance (Wellington), and Auckland University of Technology (Auckland), respectively.  The cultural performances attracted great interests from students and teachers of the respective educational institutions. 

The Royal Thai Embassy and the Thai community in New Zealand were both very proud of these opportunities to share so many aspects of Thai culture with the people of New Zealand, as a way to celebrate the 60^th anniversary of our relationship.  Following these events the Embassy has received many messages of appreciation, both written and verbal, giving very positive feedback on the aspects of the Khon performance and the festival that were particularly enjoyed by those attending.  We believe that these events have served to strengthen our relationship further at the fundamental people-to-people level.

เมื่อวันที่ 7 เมษายน 2559 เวลา 18.00 น. ณ โรงละคร St.James Theatre ทูตมาริษ เสงี่ยมพงษ์ และภรรยา รวมทั้งข้าราชการสถานทูต และสมาชิกทีมประเทศไทย ได้เป็นเจ้าภาพจัดงานเลี้ยงรับรองผู้แทนรัฐบาล สมาชิกสภาผู้แทนราษฎร ข้าราชการ เจ้าหน้าที่ของรัฐ และบุคคลต่างๆ จากชุมชนชาวนิวซีแลนด์ และชาวไทยที่พำนักอาศัยอยู่ในประเทศนิวซีแลนด์ ในโอกาสครบรอบ 60 ปีความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตไทย-นิวซีแลนด์ ประเทศทั้งสองได้สถาปนาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกันเมื่อวันที่ 26 มีนาคม ปี ค.ศ. 1956

ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศทั้งสองได้พัฒนาไปอย่างราบรื่นบนพื้นฐานของความร่วมมือ และความช่วยเหลือเกื้อกูลเพื่อผลประโยชน์ร่วมกัน เหตุการณ์สำคัญที่ทำให้ประวัติศาสตร์ความสัมพันธ์ไทย-นิวซีแลนด์มีความใกล้ชิดกันมากยิ่งไปอีก คือการเสด็จพระราชดำเนินเยือนประเทศนิวซีแลนด์อย่างเป็นทางการของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ และสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถเมื่อเดือนสิงหาคม ปี ค.ศ. 1962 ซึ่งเป็นครั้งแรกในประวัติศาสตร์ของประเทศนิวซีแลนด์ที่ได้มีโอกาสต้อนรับพระมหากษัตริย์จากต่างแดน ทำให้ประชาชนชาวนิวซีแลนด์ยังคงประทับใจในพระมหากรุณาธิคุณของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ และสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ จวบจนปัจจุบัน 

หลังงานเลี้ยงรับรองในโอกาสการเฉลิมฉลอง 60 ปีความสัมพันธ์ไทย-นิวซีแลนด์ เวลา 19.00 น. วันที่ 7 เมษายน 2559 สถานทูต ณ กรุงเวลลิงตันได้จัดการแสดงโขนชุดรามเกียรติ์ เพื่อเผยแพร่ศิลปวัฒนธรรมของไทย การแสดงในครั้งนี้ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ และกระทรวงวัฒนธรรม โดยนายชัยสิริ อนะมาน ที่ปรึกษารัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ และนางลินนา ตังธสิริ รองอธิบดีกรมสารนิเทศได้นำคณะนักแสดงและนักดนตรีจำนวนกว่า 40 ชีวิตจากกรมศิลปากร ไปแสดงให้ชาวนิวซีแลนด์ได้ชมด้วยความตื่นตาตื่นใจ รวมทั้งได้จัดสาธิตวิธิการทำหัวโขน และการปักฉลุเครื่องแต่งกายโขนให้ผู้สนใจได้ชมด้วย การแสดงโขนชุดรามเกียรติ์ประสบความสำเร็จในการเผยแพร่ศิลปวัฒนธรรมได้เป็นอย่างดีโดยได้รับความสนใจจากผู้เข้าชมชาวนิวซีแลนด์จำนวนกว่า 1,200 คน และสามารถสร้างความภาคภูมิใจให้กับชุมชนชาวไทยในในศิลป วัฒนธรรม และอารยธรรมซึ่งมีความเก่าแก่ และมีคุณค่าสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ด้วย 

สถานทูต ณ กรุงเวลลิงตันได้จัดงานเทศกาลไทยขึ้นที่ Odlins Plaza บริเวณ Waterfront ของกรุงเวลลิงตัน ระหว่างวันที่ 9 -10 เมษายน 2559 งานดังกล่าวถูกจัดขึ้นเพื่อเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโครงการเฉลิมฉลองครบรอบ 60 ปีความสัมพันธ์ไทย-นิวซีแลนด์ ซึ่งนอกจากจะมีการออกร้านอาหารไทยซึ่งปัจจุบันได้รับความนิยมเป็นอย่างมากจากชาวนิวซีแลนด์ และบุคคลต่างๆ โดยทั่วไปแล้ว งานเทศกาลไทยยังได้รับความสนับสนุนจากการท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย สำนักงาน ณ นครซิดนีย์นำบุคลากรดินทางไปสาธิตศิลปะและวัฒนธรรมไทย ในการแกะสลักเทียนหอม ผลไม้ และการทำบายศรีเพื่อเป็นการส่งเสริมการท่องเที่ยวประเทศไทยอีกด้านหนึ่งด้วย วัตถุประสงค์สำคัญอีกประการหนึ่งของการจัดงานเทศกาลไทยคือการส่งเสริมความสัมพันธ์ระดับประชน-ต่อ-ประชาชน โดยสถานทูตได้เชิญองค์กรการกุศลของนิวซีแลนด์ ได้แก่ Star Jam และ Wellington Hospital Foundation ให้ร่วมงานออกร้านเพื่อส่งเสริมกิจกรรมที่เป็นสาธารณประโยชน์ และหารายได้เข้ากองทุนขององค์กรอีกด้วย

นอกจากนี้ ในวันที่ 8 วันที่ 11 และวันที่ 14 เมษายน สถานทูตฯ ได้จัดการแสดงทางวัฒนธรรม อาทิ การแสดงโขน ที่โรงเรียนมัธยมศึกษา Kapiti College (เมืองพาราพาราอูมู), New Zealand School of Dance (กรุงเวลลิงตัน) และ Auckland University of Technology (นครโอ๊คแลนด์) ตามลำดับ ซึ่งการแสดงทางวัฒนธรรมดังกล่าวได้รับความสนใจเป็นอย่างมากจากครู และนักเรียนของทั้งสามสถาบันการศึกษา

กิจกรรมข้างต้นมีวัตถุประสงค์ในการส่งเสริมอัตลักษณ์ไทย และสร้างความเข้าใจและความตระหนักถึงประเทศไทยของชาวนิวซีแลนด์ เสริมสร้างความสัมพันธ์อันดีในระดับประชาชนของสองประเทศ รวมทั้งยังช่วยสร้างมิตรของประเทศไทย โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งในปีครบรอบ 60 ปี การสถาปนาความสัมพันธ์ทางการทูตระหว่างไทยและนิวซีแลนด์ในปีนี้
